When Porsche launched the Cayenne back in 2002, it had to face backlash from gearheads who claimed that the firm should stick to its low-slung sports cars. Then, the Cayenne SUV, as well as the Macan crossover, launched in 2014, became the automaker's best-selling models.
Then, when Porsche's first production EV, the Taycan, saw the light of day in 2019, once again, purists said the company should have stayed away from such powertrains. However, years passed, and even the most stubborn ICE-diehards started taking in the trends.
So, here is the all-new Porsche Cayenne Electric enjoying the spotlight. The model is building on the super popular ICE Cayenne, which accounted for 22,432 units sold back in 2024.
The automaker has opened order books for the EV in the United States and launched the online configurator. Porsche says that more than 110,000 users made unique builds during the first four days, setting a record for the brand.
Furthermore, another 10,500 potential buyers have already registered their interest through Porsche's hand-raiser program. They were attracted by the fact that the Cayenne Electric is the most customizable Porsche so far.
The Germans offer 10 standard colors included in four categories (Contrasts, Shades, Dreams, and Legends), but those who are interested in going home with a Cayenne EV can also try the Paint-to-Sample or Sonderwunsch options.
Prosche offers nine wheel designs and ten wheel colors, including Satin Pyro Red and Satin Indigo Blue. Eight leather color combinations are available for the interior. Customers can order either 21- or 22-inch wheels.
Some of the most expensive options are th Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes, offered for $10,710, the $3,400 Sliding Panoramic Roof with Variable Light, and the $6,010 Burmester 3D High-End Surround Sound System.
The EV starts at $163,000, but checking a few option boxes can take it well above the $200,000 mark. The automaker believes that it is also the customization potential that makes the model even more interesting.
One thing buyers can't customize is the powertrain. Porsche offers two options. The base version comes with 402 horsepower (408 metric horsepower) and 615 pound-feet (834 Newton meters) of torque for a run from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 kph) in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 4.5 seconds.
Porsche also offers its most production model yet. The Cayenne Turbo Electric rocks the mind-blowing 1,139 horsepower, which makes it flash from 0 to 60 in just 2.4 seconds, run the quarter mile in 9.9 seconds, and max out at 162 mph (261 kph).
So, what customers are getting for an MSRP of $163,000 is a hypercar in SUV clothes. It is not just internet fame that the electric Cayenne is enjoying. The model has already made public debut in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, braving the sand dunes.
