Volkswagen Reveals One-Off ID.3 GTX Fire+ICE at ID. Meeting As Tribute to a Golf II
If you're saying the Volkswagen ID.3 isn't intended as a potential replacement for the iconic yet aging Golf, think again - as even the company says so, albeit subliminally, with one-off creations.

Volkswagen was recently present at the ID. Meeting held in a very ritzy location - Locarno, Switzerland. While there, they didn't come empty-handed and instead brought the one-off ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice creation that was made in collaboration with Bogner as a tribute to an exclusive version of the Golf Mk2. If that's not a hint towards the ID.3 all-electric hatchback eventually replacing the Golf altogether, I don't know what to call it.

Anyway, the special variant of the Golf II from 1990 was called "Fire and Ice" and was created in collaboration with fashion designer and director Willy Bogner. It had the extravagance of fashion, of course – including a dark violet pearl effect shade, different alloy wheels, front spoiler, and body extensions – plus access to the most powerful version, the 160-ps GTI. Back in the day, it was a surprise hit, and even though only 10k units were initially planned, Volkswagen ended up selling almost 17k of them.

Now, as a callback to the cool moment, Volkswagen presented the one-off ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice at the ID. Meeting in Locarno, Switzerland – again developed in partnership with Bogner. Thanks to the Munich-based luxury sports fashion brand, the car is again very close to the cult hit from the 1990s. Even better, it comes with all the assets of this modern age – including a three-layer paint finish with a glass bead effect and an all-electric powertrain.

The new Volkswagen ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice now has an Electric Violet pearl effect color that was specifically developed for this unique EV, and thanks to the embedded glass beads, it can change the shade. There are also Flaming Red roof frame strips, a transparent matte Fire+Ice geometric pattern on the sides, 21-inch alloy wheels, and the original model's logo from the 1990s on the B-pillar and the roof edge spoiler.

Moving inside, the cockpit is dominated by the Fire and Ice sides - Flaming Red dominates the driver's portion while the seats and interior on the passenger side get Ice Blue design elements. The stainless steel accelerator and brake pedals dump the Play/Pause design of the ID. family for a special Fire+Ice logo on each, the instrument panel's upper portion and the floor mats get a laser-engraved pattern, and the Bogner Fire+Ice clothing collection inspires a lot of the colors, fabrics, and materials used inside.

The seats, for example, have the Fire+Ice down jacket design, including the well-known B-zippers, and if you open the latter, underneath, there's the original model's fabric from the 1990s. As for what's 'under the hood,' this is the VW ID.3 GTX Performance version with 322 hp and 402 lb-ft (545 Nm) of torque, which is enough to sprint to 62 mph (100 kph) in 5.7 seconds and top out at an electronically-limited maximum speed of 124 mph (200 kph).

"With the ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice, we are emphasizing how highly emotional our sporty top model is. Our design team had incredible fun reinterpreting the iconic 90s design and thus developing it further," said Andreas Mindt, Head of Design at Volkswagen. "The special thing is that we were able to integrate many of our original materials and accessories into the interior of the vehicle," added Tom Becker, Director of Bogner Fire+Ice.
