It's no secret that BMW is preparing to give the current-generation 5 Series a facelift. We've already seen prototypes of the standard and Touring wagon variants undergoing testing, but this is our first sighting of the updated M5 that will rival the new Audi RS7 Sportback.
In terms of design changes, the camouflage is covering up the front fascia, which means the prototype is hiding some redesigned headlights, a modified front bumper, reshaped air intakes and a new grille. The grille also appears to be larger, but nowhere near as gigantic as the 4 Series Concept's that previews the next-generation M3 and M4. Similar changes can be seen at the back, as the new rear lights and rear bumper are also covered up, suggesting some more design changes. The dual exhaust tips also indicate we're looking at the high-performance M5 version of the upcoming 5 Series facelift.
We don't have any information about the updated M5's powertrain options. In the current-generation M5, power is provided by a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that delivers 600 horsepower in the standard M5 and 625 horsepower in the range-topping Competition model.
Power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic, while 0-62 mph takes 3.3 seconds in both models. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, but this can be increased to 190 mph with the optional M Driver's Package. Don't be surprised if BMW extracts a few more ponies out of the M5 facelift and reduces the emissions to keep it competitive.
Unfortunately, we weren't supplied with any photos of the cabin, but it seems likely that there will be an updated infotainment system and new driver assists. Judging from its current state of development, the updated M5 should debut sometime in 2020 and go on sale as a 2021 model, which will be four model years after the current model launched. The regular 5 Series and Touring are likely to break cover first, however.
